![]() Dice Club is not nearly as bad as some of those, just a bit disappointing. There are lots of anime that I don’t blog about, because somewhere between a few minutes and a few episodes into the series, one or more inappropriately dressed and depicted women shows up. It is a reminder that like cultural productions worldwide, anime is a very mixed genre. I remember last year I tried watching After School Dice Club while it was airing, and the subbed version felt so dry and dull that I was going to drop the. Overall it’s ok, I just wish they had worked a bit harder to exceed genre conventions. The focus is mostly on German board games and they play real games that exist, including explaining the rules. The most interesting character is actually the friend who introduces them to board games, Midori Ono 大野 翠, a serious girl who wants to become a game designer. The personalities are a bit too extreme, Miki is withdrawn to the point of possible high-functioning autism mixed with anxiety and depression (in part due to a past history of experiencing bullying), and Aya is outgoing to the point of basically being a Manic Pixie Dream Girl. It is basically the journey of Miki Takekasa 武笠美姫 to overcome her social anxiety and to better understand the nature of fun, helped initially by the ebullient Aya Takayashiki 高屋敷綾. I would skip episode 8 due to this issue. Ive watched all of After School Dice Club at least twice. It’s ok, but particularly for a 2019 anime, not ambitious enough in challenging genre conventions about the depiction of women. It’s available on Funimation only, although all Funimation titles are supposed to eventually transition to Crunchyroll.
